A Lot Shorter Up Close

You know that feeling you get when you can tell people are watching and whispering about you? And you're not sure if it is good or bad?

The couple kept looking my direction as I volunteered at a local event for young music students. Finally, they approached me, and the woman asked, "Don't you play keyboard on stage at our church?"

I smiled and responded with a yes, feeling a little appreciated and encouraged that, perhaps, my keyboarding activities on Sunday mornings do make a difference.

"We thought so, but weren't sure," she continued. "You're a lot shorter up close."

BAM.

They meant nothing negative by it. I'm sure they simply meant they expected me to be taller because I exude such a powerful, commanding presence.....right?

Ha!

I laughed at her remark, and we began to chat.

But isn't this always our fear of what might happen
when people actually see us up close?

They might notice the rings around our eyes,
see that our mood is not always sunny,
recognize the tears we are choking back,
hear the edge of frustration in our voice,

learn that we are distressed about our jobs,
our finances,
our relationships,
our health,
ourselves.

We might fall short of who we appear to be from far away.

What are ways you think you would fall short if people knew you very closely?
