Strength In Disguise

I've always noticed how people
admire the brave, strong ones---
those who endure painful struggles
with their faith intact,
their smiles still in place,
holding it all together
when everyone else would fall apart.

I admire those people too.

But I also admire
the ones who,
openly,
face their heartaches
less than heroically.
The ones who don't try
to deny their tears.
The ones who admit
their faith has floundered.
The ones who explode
to their closest friends,
"I'm still angry that happened!"
The ones who share
their fragile, truthful, human stories---

because being honest and real
in a world that tells us
to hold it together and keep it to ourselves
requires strength also.
