What is that one
bare-boned prayer
you pray
when you feel
you don't have a prayer left?
When you resign yourself to the fact
that healing isn't coming,
relationships won't be restored,
dreams will never actualize,
rescue won't arrive?
When you have no words left,
what is that one remaining,
last-ditch prayer you pray?
"God, please help me."
"Forgive me."
"But in heaven..."
"Why, God?"
Or the one I often come down to:
"Help me to trust you."
And when we see no possible hope left, convinced our requests make no difference,
sometimes even our fragmented, one-line prayers feel so hard to pray.
In much the same way we withdraw from talking to friends when life
feels too overwhelming for audible words,
we frequently withdraw much of our prayers also.
But if God doesn't expect elaborate, expertly composed prayers from us at our best,
surely he doesn't expect them from us at our worst either.
Maybe our discouraged, one-line prayers---
those feeble attempts to at least keep the communication lines open---
matter as much as our lengthy, hope-filled ones do.
What is the one-line prayer you pray
when you have lost hope in your prayers?

How gorgeous! Lovely post.
My one-liner is: Thank you. If we make room for gratitude, we'll be just fine:)
P.S: Where was the photo taken? Beautiful!
Thank you! And that photo was taken at Freeman Lake in Elizabethtown, KY, about an hour or so from where I live. Beautiful place! I'm enjoying catching up on your blog!
